Hickory Bow, trying again.

It's time to get back on the horse and attempt another bow.  I definitely plan on posting up pictures when I get to the tillering stage to get some support and hopefully get this one (more) right than...

Re: Hickory Bow, trying again.

The narrow handle argues against a bendy handle, however, the thickness of the handle as opposed to the thickness of the limbs has a lot to do with it. I'd say it depends on the width of the limb at...

Re: Hickory Bow, trying again.

Thanks for the input, Jawge and PoetArt. I've decided to play it safe (if that's ever true as a novice bowyer) and go with a stiff riser. The glue has dried and I've begun floor tillering, about to...

Re: Hickory Bow, trying again.

I'm a bit into long-string tillering.  Been trying to get some bend near the fades.  I'm hoping the critical eye of the wonderful community here can give me some pointers about how to proceed and...

Re: Hickory Bow, trying again.

So you've glued on a solid riser? Hm. I hope that handle stays on the limbs... How thick was the hickory, prior to the handle being glued on? You might get problems with the handle popping off. The...

Thanks Darksoul. Your information is very good for a beginner like me. I really appreciate the link. That sort of starting procedure is exactly where I was making my best guess about where to proceed....

Re: Hickory Bow, trying again.

I'm looking for some review on the tiller of this bow.  It pulls to about 35# at 28".  68" ntn with about 1" of set after it relaxes.  I feel like it is bending too much at the fades and not enough...

Re: Hickory Bow, trying again.

Its hard to tell exactly, but the right limb looks to have a few stiff spots in it, but that may be because of the vertical lines in the background distorting the way the eye sees the bow. try another...

Re: Hickory Bow, trying again.

You are correct, Poetart. The right limb was a bit stiff in mid-limb. I got it bending a little better there, shortened the stiffer limb by 1" and made it the lower limb, and adjusted tiller slightly...

Re: Hickory Bow, trying again.

Nice work, I think you are looking good. A reverse overlay of the full draw photo shows the arms have very close to identical bend. I like the look of the fades as the working arm bend starts a bit...

Re: Hickory Bow, trying again.

This bow is ready to be finished. The wife has requested a "girly" stain, so I'm going to brew up some Rit dye and denatured alcohol to hopefully penetrate into this hickory for a pink or purple...

Re: Hickory Bow, trying again.

Looking at the almost finished bow, it looks like I somehow ended up placing the point of pressure below center again!  Luckily I still have enough material left to reshape things and move the point...

Re: Hickory Bow, trying again.

I don't know about the center of draw, but this looks to me like a well made bow. The final tiller looks sweet, and I can tell you like the way it handles and shoots. Good job.

Re: Hickory Bow, trying again.

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but I thought I'd post the results of the hickory build.  The wife requested pink color, so I used pink and purple Rit dyes in Denatured Alcohol to do some striping....

Re: Hickory Bow, trying again.

congrats on finishing the bow. what did you seal it with? the stain looks kind of funky almost like a snake skin kind of pattern, i like it. i also use artificial sinew to sew up the leather grips on...

Re: Hickory Bow, trying again.

For the stain, I mixed up a batch of purple rit dye. I was really bummed to see that almost zero color was being absorbed by the wood, even after 15 or so applications. So I mixed up some red and...

Re: Hickory Bow, trying again.

That's how i have done it, with angled dowels. You just need to put them in a place they don't affect the strength of anything else.  If they come out the front, they better be well inboard of the...

Re: Hickory Bow, trying again.

Having asymetrical limbs is not a crime, assuming the wood can take the strain (you have enough width and length, and total mass in the right places. To my eye this bow is bending just a BIT too much...
